" The History of the Book Seminar is back in action this semester. We'll
have a full schedule for the semester coming to you a bit later in the term, but wanted to make this preliminary announcement of our first talk. It's by Giles Mandelbrote of the British Library (London) and his subject is the First Printed Library Catalogue, a German Doctor's Library Catalogue of 1572. "

DC Description : This paper introduces a discovery which is (arguably) the earliest known printed catalogue of any library. Martius (c.1535-1585), an Augsburg physician who had travelled widely in Italy and southern France, assembled a collection of about a thousand titles, which was notable for its specialization in medical subjects. A question of particular interest for book historians, however, is why his library catalogue was such an early example of its genre to be printed .
